We use Kjos and Melbay publishers (USA) and we ship direct to Cambodia in our Phnom Peng Music School. Our students have access to only but the best learning materials and resources and our teachers are well trained in using them effectively. Our Head of Music – Arianna Malatesti – is in charge of ensuring quality in the delivery of our programs.

For the youngest children we use books with colorful games and quizzes, this is really fun for them and all kids love them. We  use alternative methods for teens and adults, ranging from Pop to Jazz, but with much emphasis on the Classics and piano technique. (Below an example of scales and Hanon for Piano).

Why Young Kids Learn Faster than Adults?

Young learners 3 to 6 years old in Cambodia are normally the fastest learners. There are various reasons for this, including the fact that children’s brains are instinctively tuned to copying, so t is important that teachers show movements slowly and repetitively.

The biggest contributor for this ability in children is their use of Unconditional Response. A child, with his limited experience and relatively empty memory bank , has fewer options of choice than an adult. He will not question, doubt or offer alternative solutions yet. So, if a teacher is clear and firm in explaining a skill or movement, the child is likely to memorize it (hence learning it) very fast.

Unconditional Response in adults is not used as much, and because this results in more choice variables it leads to doubt, hesitation and difficulty in memorizing. This slows learning down.

Can I Learn Music As An Adult? (Piano Lessons for Adults in Phnom Penh)

Of course – in fact at SoundsKool we have many adult learners having a great time! But Adults have a problem: Memory.

A typical adult has had plenty of life experience learning from years of successes and failures. His/Her brain is wired differently than a child. Children have the advantage with regards to memory, because of Unconditional Response.Adults need a logical approach, as their brains require it to make sense of their actions, leading to inefficient response and ultimately inability to memorize.

There are 3 types of memory that are employed by the brain when learning piano:

Photographic Memory / Sensory Memory / Sub-Conscious or Implicit Memory

Adults rely heavily on implicit memory, as every-day tasks and actions become second-nature and don’t require conscious action (brushing your teeth, walking, drinking, texting and so on).

Working Memory (Photographic memory belongs to this category) stimulates an immediate response by the brain. This in turn sends different signals derived from Implicit memory and can lead to inefficient actions by the body (brushing your teeth with your left hand is not as easy for example, because that movement is new and not stored in Implicit Memory banks). Essentially when adult brain see new information, they first try to solve it using their Implicit memory bank. This is an instinctive survival function wired in our brains. It offers the fastest response time, but only to things that are routine.

The trick is to exercise Sensory memory, by repeating movement without employing Photographic memory or Implicit Memory. This leads to movement memory and the ability to pre-program movements without requiring logical explanation or even tapping into other memory banks. Adults sometimes wonder how can concert pianists memorize hours of music – the answer is that they use Sensory Memory (memory of the fingers: touch, feel, speed), without resorting to other types, freeing the mind in order to apply interpretation to their performance. In essence, their hands play on auto-pilot.

This can be seen when the musicians are often seen moving, humming along whilst they perform, sometimes with their eyes closed. It is a state of trance where Sensory Memory is at its peak.
