Guitar Price in Cambodia?

Many expatriates and tourists are sometimes surprised that Cambodia’s retail prices are higher than, say, the USA or neighboring Thailand. But is it really that weird?

Read the article below to find out why this is the case, in 3 steps.

1. Low Volume Imports

In Cambodia it’s quite easy to import. There are plenty of freight forwarders and the import tax is at around 7.7% for the lowest bracket. Add 10% VAT, insurance, container fees, warehousing and transportation it easily add up to 30-40% of the original cost.

Smaller shops cannot purchase in great volume, so proportionally they would pay more for each product than distributors in the USA or Thailand. A typical guitar price in Cambodia would obviously be higher as a result.

2. Cross Country Imports

Some distributors are authorized by a the brand (for example by Aria Guitars, Roland, Yamaha) for import in a specific country. This company is the only one allowed to import directly from the factory. However, there are distributors overseas that ship to Cambodia in what is called cross-country distribution (or gray import). These products are not authorized by the Cambodian distributor and are not covered by warranty or returns. In most cases they are imported without VAT or tax documents.

This is bad news for the consumer:

– No warranty cover or authorized repair service.

– Defective products.

– Very often sold alongside fakes.

– No transparent pricing.

– Guitar prices can vary greatly from shop to shop for the same item.

– No user manuals in most cases.

– Low stock, meaning you end up buying display models at the full price.

– No refunds.

Consumers should always purchase new musical instruments by Authorized Dealers by checking their credentials. Real dealers offer warranty, original instruments, returns and full service, as well as user manuals. Check authorized Dealerships for Aria Guitars here >

3. Guitar Price in Cambodia

Branded Guitars in Cambodia (Fender, Aria, Gibson, Epiphone, Ibanez and so on) need to be imported and paid upfront directly by the shop. This is really not the case in other countries where shops buy from distributors, often on very relaxed payment terms. This is double whammy, as a shop would need to outlay 100% cost upfront, pay higher costs of import, and then sell, over time, at competitive prices to beat gray imports. This pressure results in shops buying less stock of low-end items and reselling them at high retail prices. A way of checking guitar prices in Cambodia is often by referring to USA prices: Check USa Guitar Prices here >
